Sustainability in Action: Woodsmith's Passive House Advantage

Passive House, Certified: What Mike’s Latest Achievement Means for Your Build

At Woodsmith Building Co., we believe great building goes hand in hand with responsibility to our clients, our team, and the environment.

Our director, Mike Smith, is now a Certified Passive House Tradesperson. It’s an internationally recognised qualification held by just 65 people in New Zealand and represents a serious commitment to sustainable, high-performance building.

What is Passive House?

Passive House is a global standard for energy-efficient building that focuses on comfort, health, and incredibly low energy use. It’s not just about adding solar panels or choosing eco materials but designing and building in a way that naturally maintains a consistent indoor temperature, reduces the need for artificial heating and cooling, and improves air quality year-round.

Why does this certification matter?

Becoming a Certified Passive House Tradesperson isn’t easy. It requires in-depth knowledge of building physics, airtightness, insulation detailing, and thermal bridging that culmintaes with a rigorous exam to ensure a high level of technical competency.

For our clients, it means peace of mind: knowing we have the in-house expertise to bring sustainable design principles into every stage of your build.

What does this mean for your home?

Even if you’re not building a full Passive House, the principles can still guide smarter, more sustainable decisions such as window placement and insulation, energy systems, and materials.

With Mike’s certification, we’re even better equipped to help you:

  • Reduce your home’s energy use

  • Improve air quality and thermal comfort

  • Lower long-term running costs

  • Make conscious building choices that benefit both your family and the planet

Sustainable building, the Woodsmith way

We believe a home should be built to last both structurally and in supporting your wellbeing and the environment around you.

Mike’s certification is just one more step in our ongoing journey to build better, smarter, and more responsibly.
